The Beijing Hebei Bangzi Troupe will perform two classic excerpts at the former Jingxian Guild Hall on November 1 at 3:00 p.m., with the outdoor show streamed live, according to 京报网. The venue, also known as the former site of Weekly Review, will host the performance as part of the Xicheng district "会馆有戏" (Guild Halls Have Theater) series.
The first excerpt, Borrowing the Fan, drawn from Journey to the West, depicts the contest of wits between Sun Wukong and the Princess Iron Fan and features lively martial stagecraft. The second, Mother Yue Tattoos Her Son, tells the story of a mother admonishing her child and inscribing "serve the country with utmost loyalty" on his back, with what 京报网 describes as weighty and moving vocal delivery. One is a playful mythological piece, the other a tale of family and patriotic devotion.
The event is part of the City Theater Carnival, a major segment of the "大戏看北京" 2026 Beijing International Theater Performance Season, 京报网 reports. Xicheng district's series spans 12 guild halls, each paired with a different opera genre — an arrangement the organizers describe as "one hall, one character; one melody, one hometown" — intended to bring historic buildings to life and carry opera traditions forward.
Viewers can watch the livestream on the WeChat Channels, Weibo, Douyin and Kuaishou accounts of "北京发布"; the WeChat Channels account of "大戏看北京"; and the WeChat Channels, Douyin, Kuaishou and Weibo accounts of "北京西城."
Watch for the November 1 broadcast to see how the troupe's high-pitched Bangzi style carries through the century-old guild hall setting.
